Intelligence Inside Concrete

Precision Concrete Corrosion Monitoring

Precision distinguishes itself by offering a comprehensive suite of solutions for monitoring the corrosion of steel rebar in concrete.

This includes the supply of precision corrosion probes, sensors and data measuring instruments specifically to record measurements and data and expert guidance on integrating these components into broader structural monitoring systems. Unique in its internal capabilities, Precision provides all these services under one roof, eliminating the need for multiple vendors. This approach not only simplifies the procurement process but also resolves common issues related to system interoperability and integration.

Our range of instrumentation is designed to allow for flexible configuration and integration into larger structural monitoring networks, or for standalone operation. The instrumentation DAUs (Data Acquisition Units) have a universal data interface and output stream consisting of RS485 + Modbus protocol, or Ethernet, as well as allowing for direct USB connection interfaces.

The Precisions system level approach to design allows for flexibility to integrate into 3rd party data storage and processing systems such as data servers, or cloud based data visualisation and BIMs (Building Information Management) systems.

Concreteintel logo

Concreteintel offers a cost-effective solution for long-term monitoring of corrosion in reinforced concrete structures.

ConcreteIntel is an advanced real-time corrosion monitoring system designed for the early detection and evaluation of corrosion within concrete structures. By identifying corrosion onset and offering remote monitoring capabilities, it provides dependable insights into corrosion progression. This integrated solution utilises embedded probes to assess reinforcement condition, process data, and provide real-time, precise estimations of corrosion rates.

Retro Fit Concrete Corrosion Monitoring Probe designed for post-construction installation, ideal for both confirming repairs in new concrete and general monitoring needs.

The retro fit  probe provides precise measurements of corrosion parameters and concrete cure conditions. This sensor supports continuous analysis from concrete installation to full cure, eliminating the need for separate systems to verify passivation layers. Accurate and reliable data enable proactive interventions, enhancing structural integrity and extending infrastructure lifespan.

DAUintel Instrumentation

The DAUintel functions as the data acquisition unit, processing data collected from the Concreteintel probe series.

Capable of capturing corrosion data at multiple depths, it enables comprehensive analysis and can be programmed to perform LPR, resistivity, Ecorr, and Icorr measurements with various electrode combinations.

The detrimental impact of corrosion on concrete structures

Corrosion stands as a significant concern for concrete structures, particularly regarding the deterioration of embedded reinforcements, with considerable economic repercussions. Often evolving internally, visible surface damage typically indicates advanced deterioration.

Accurately measuring corrosion within reinforced concrete is paramount for assessing structural durability and lifespan. Timely detection of corrosion allows for proactive intervention, extending structural longevity, substantially diminishing maintenance expenses, and ensuring safety.

The importance of concrete corrosion monitoring in structural health

Corrosion in concrete occurs primarily due to the presence of moisture and oxygen, which initiate chemical reactions with the reinforcing steel (typically steel bars or wire mesh) embedded within the concrete.

When the protective alkaline layer surrounding the steel, known as the passivation layer, is compromised, either by carbonation (penetration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere) or chloride ingress (from de-icing salts or environmental conditions), the steel becomes susceptible to corrosion.

The chemical reactions that follow involve the conversion of iron in the steel to iron oxide, commonly known as rust. This process leads to the formation of expansive rust products, which exert pressure on the surrounding concrete, causing cracking, spalling, and ultimately structural deterioration.

Factors such as high humidity, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, and poor construction practices can exacerbate corrosion. Over time, if left unchecked, corrosion can compromise the integrity of the concrete structure, posing safety risks and necessitating costly repairs or replacements. Therefore, effective corrosion monitoring and preventive measures are essential to mitigate its detrimental effects and ensure the long-term durability of concrete structures.
